Thank You Cure SMA Volunteers!

Happy National Volunteer Week! This week we're celebrating our Cure SMA volunteers.

Each year, Cure SMA hosts over 300 local events, the Annual SMA Conference, and sends out thousands of resources including information packets, care packages, and equipment.  Without our wonderful volunteers, the success of these events and programs would not be possible.

Thank you to our chapter leaders, event organizers, conference volunteers, office volunteers and families for their hard work and dedication to Cure SMA!

Types of Volunteers

Cure SMA has four main types of volunteers: chapter leaders, event organizers and volunteers, conference volunteers, and office volunteers.

Our chapter leaders are the volunteers who represent Cure SMA on the ground. These leaders support the mission of Cure SMA in several ways such as providing a base of community and support for families affected by SMA and by organizing fundraising events for Cure SMA.

Event organizers and volunteers host events across the country such as Walk-n-Rolls, golf events, galas. Our volunteers make each event a success!

Conference volunteers return year after year to help during the biggest event of the year. Cure SMA volunteers leave their jobs and families at home to help SMA families have a memorable conference experience!  Each and every one of our conference volunteers has a major impact on the atmosphere and success of our conference, and every year their impact radiates throughout the weekend. Their long days of hard work provide families with the reassurance that their children are well cared for and are having fun, while they attend workshops and learn the latest information on SMA. The enthusiasm they provide for the kids in the children’s program, during the carnival games, the dance party and at our other events, is contagious with each event. Our volunteers take great pride in helping to ensure that at each conference they attend, families leave with the feeling that this was the best conference yet. Without these volunteers our conference would be nowhere near what it encompasses today!

Cure SMA office volunteers assist with various projects at the National Office such as mailings, labeling care package items, sorting inventory, loading the conference truck, and much more. Office volunteers help us give the SMA community the resources they need.

Community Response

Cure SMA and the SMA community are grateful for the countless hours Cure SMA volunteers have dedicated to the SMA community across the country!

The ladies behind the Walk for Graham are creative, selfless, and have the biggest hearts for Graham and the SMA community. They make this event such a huge success because every last detail is planned with a lot of thought and love behind it. They want to make it the greatest event it can be, for Graham and our family and everyone that Cure SMA supports.
Adrienne Vollmer, Walk for Graham Event Organizer from Westfield, IN

"Our son Javier Michael Brookes was diagnosed with Type I SMA. Cure SMA has been a tremendous resource and place of support for our family since he passed. In addition to championing a cure, it provides tangible support to diagnosed families, including toys for diagnosed children, information about resources for treatment and emotional support to parents, family members and friends. Our involvement with Cure SMA is a way for our family to do something great for Javier’s memory. We are grateful to all who walk in support of our cause - Cure SMA!"
Catherine Martin from New York, New York

Volunteering for Cure SMA allows me to give back to a worthy organization that has done so much for my warrior granddaughter. In a small way, I can help her, and others, in their fight against SMA.
Janet Kelley from Fort Worth, TX (volunteered at the Dallas Walk-n-Roll)

I have loved having the opportunity to volunteer for Cure SMA!  Not only has it given me a chance to educate and spread awareness about something that impacts my daily life, but it also has allowed me to connect with a fantastic group of supportive people.  Cure SMA has become like a family to me and I’m so grateful for all they do to improve the lives of families like mine."
Eleanor Bolton, SMA Type III, from Davidson, NC

"Volunteering with Cure SMA has been an extraordinary experience for me.  To be a part of the efforts and dedication of everyone involved in the quest to find a cure for SMA is both humbling and exhilarating!"
Maureen Ford from Ormond Beach, FL (volunteered at St. Augustine Walk-n-Roll)

Volunteering at the Cure SMA Conference is one of my favorite weekends of the year. Working in the Children’s Program Room, I love being a part of what allows families to enjoy the conference. Getting to know people over the years has been rewarding and inspiring. The impact I have working the conference pales in comparison to the profound impact that the Cure SMA family has had on me."
Patrick Hogan, 10-year SMA Conference Volunteer

Volunteering empowers people to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. Cure SMA is driven by the efforts of our local volunteers. Contact your local chapter or email info@curesma.org to find out how to volunteer.
