Cure SMA Expands Travel Support Package Eligibility to Include Teens with SMA

Cure SMA is excited to share an important update to our travel support programs. In response to community feedback and the growing need for accessible travel support for younger individuals, we have expanded eligibility for our Travel Support Package to now include teens with SMA.

Previously available only to adults with SMA, the Travel Support Package is designed to help individuals with SMA travel by air more safely, comfortably, and with greater peace of mind. We recognize that teens with SMA face many of the same travel-related challenges as adults—particularly when flying with mobility devices—and this expansion ensures they have access to the same essential tools and support.

Eligible teens will now be able to apply for and receive the same Travel Support Package, which includes recommended assistive travel equipment such as a portable transfer sling, AirTag and holder for tracking mobility devices, supportive travel pillow, customizable signage materials, and a portable inflight foot stool.

To qualify, applicants must have a confirmed SMA diagnosis, reside within the United States, and meet the updated age eligibility requirements of 13 years of age or older as outlined in the request form. Parents or guardians may assist teens with the application process as needed.

This expansion complements Cure SMA’s broader travel resources, including our Travel Resources webpage, downloadable travel guides, air travel advocacy tools, and educational webinars—created to help individuals and families navigate travel with SMA more confidently.

Cure SMA would like to extend a big thank you to our Sponsors Biogen, Genentech and Reach4Sky for funding the expansion of these travel resources to include teens with SMA.

We are also grateful to all of our sponsors, donors, and supporters whose generosity makes it possible to grow programs like this and better serve the entire SMA community. We look forward to continuing to expand access to resources that support independence, inclusion, and quality of life for people of all ages living with SMA.
