Cure SMA Updates Health Insurance Road Map to Support Patients and Families

Cure SMA has updated its Health Insurance Road Map to help patients, families, and providers navigate the complexities of health insurance. The updated resource reflects the current healthcare landscape and offers essential tools to simplify challenging insurance topics and promote informed decision-making.

The Health Insurance Road Map includes:

  • Clear definitions of commonly used insurance terms
  • Guidance for evaluating health plans, including key questions to consider
  • Strategies for managing denials and appeals for SMA treatment
  • Information on pharma-sponsored patient support and access programs
  • Resources for financial assistance

This update incorporates existing resources while expanding practical guidance to address challenges such as insurance denials and appeals. The goal is to simplify complex processes and provide the SMA community with the information needed to support payer advocacy.

The Health Insurance Road Map is available on the Cure SMA Insurance Resources page, alongside other tools designed to help adults living with SMA, caregivers, and healthcare providers navigate insurance needs.

Cure SMA thanks the Medical Advisory Council for their expertise and contributions to the development of this project.

Funding for this initiative was provided by the 2025 Cure SMA Industry Collaboration.
