House of Representatives Passes 21st Century Cures

The House of Representatives has passed 21st Century Cures. Cure SMA is proud to support this legislation. Thank you for your calls and tweets to voice your support to your Representatives. They really made a difference!

So what happens next? The Senate is busy drafting their version of the bill, called “Innovation,” and we expect to see legislative language by the Fall. Eventually, the House and Senate will need to pass the same version of the bill so that it can head to the President to be signed into law. We expect that will happen in 2016. We’ll continue to monitor the progress of this bill and let you know when to contact your Senator or take other action to show your support for 21st Century Cures.

A Message from the House Energy and Commerce Committee

The U.S. House of Representatives today approved H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, by a vote of 344-77. The nonpartisan legislation will help to bring our health care system into the 21st Century, investing in science and medical innovation, incorporating the patient perspective, and modernizing clinical trials, to deliver better, faster cures to more patients and loved ones in need.

The bill’s authors, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette (D-CO), Health Subcommittee Chairman Joe Pitts (R-PA), full committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., (D-NJ), and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Gene Green (D-TX) commented:

“Today, we took a big leap on the path to cures, but we still have much work left to do. The 344 votes today should be a springboard for action. On to the Senate.”
