Whether you live with SMA, know someone who does, work in research or care, or are beginning your journey with the community—SMA Awareness Month is a time to come together to celebrate progress, honor experiences, reflect on challenges, and build momentum for the future.
The theme of SMA awareness month, “Breakthroughs Begin with You,” puts the power in your hands. It’s a reminder that every voice, every action, and every story contributes to the collective strength of the SMA community—and drives meaningful change.
From grassroots advocacy to local and virtual events, there are countless ways to get involved. We're especially excited to kick off SMA Spirit Week from August 9–16, packed with opportunities to show your pride, connect with others, and spread awareness. Check out our Spirit Week Calendar to see what's planned and be sure to snag some commemorative Cure SMA merchandise!

We're happy to share several exciting features of SMA Awareness Month 2025:
- Get Social - Share your experiences and connection to the SMA community – Tag @CureSMA and use #SMAawarenessmonth.
- Shine Bright - Each year, our community lights candles to remember those we've lost and honor the many voices that make up the SMA community. Join us on August 9 for the SMA Awareness Month Candle Lighting Ceremony.
- Join an Event - Throughout August, there are plenty of exciting Cure SMA events you can attend or register for—like our Walk-n-Roll, Endurance Races, and more.
- Tune In - We invite you to check out our Podcast Recommendations playlist on Spotify. Learn about topics including SMA, disability, and more with podcasts recommended by community members.
It is through your support that Cure SMA funds research, advocacy, and support programs to improve the quality of life for those living with SMA. We hope you'll join us throughout the month of August in fostering conversation, connectedness, and most importantly, action amongst and for our SMA community.
